Carlito

Carlito an African-American young man in his wheelchair outside his home.

Carlito was told at a young age that he had Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). DMD is a progressive condition that affects the use of muscles across the entire body. He uses a powered wheelchair to get around and he has noticed that people usually see his chair first. When Carlito is behind a screen, he is in control of who he tells about his disability, and that is empowering for him. He realized that gaming on his phone is hard for him because of the fine movements it demands.

He was connected with AbleGamers and we were able to grant him the gaming laptop that his family couldn’t afford at the time. We took him on a journey through the peer counseling process in order to ensure his success when gaming with his new equipment. He is now gaming and socializing with new friends all around the world. It was an honor to help Carlito in his quest to game.
